Productivity and relentless work to be the norm, and it's easy to succumb to stress that adversely affects our performance at work.
However, the Dutch has adopted an interesting approach known as "niksen", which translates to "doing nothing."
This lifestyle is believed to promote both physical and mental well-being by alleviating fatigue and stress.
By allowing ourselves to simply do nothing, our brains can revert to their default mode, resulting in clearer thinking and enhanced focus when we return to work.
Known for their exemplary work-life balance, the Dutch typically avoid working overtime, yet they manage to be highly efficient during working hours.
1. Different from Mindfulness
While mindfulness emphasizes being "present in the moment," niksen is about "enjoying time as it is" and allowing our thoughts to wander freely. It doesn't involve meditation, yoga, or engaging with social media.
Niksen is the art of doing nothing, creating space for our minds to rest and explore without any specific goal, which helps lower stress levels and boost creativity.
2. Not the Same as Lounging
In the Netherlands, people often practice niksen while visiting cafes, enjoying the beach, or engaging with nature through hiking and cycling.
Although relaxing at home can also mean doing nothing, it often leads to the temptation of scrolling through social media. In contrast, outdoor activities redirect our minds away from screens.
If you find yourself on a tight budget, consider a leisurely walk around your neighborhood or enjoying your favorite beverage while listening to music. Any activity that allows your mind to roam freely, without the pressure of work, embodies the essence of niksen.
3. Boosting Creativity
Engaging in niksen provides our brains with the downtime needed to rest and process information, helping resolve any creative blockages encountered during work. By permitting ourselves to do nothing, our minds can reflect and tackle challenges more inventively.
Niksen fosters new ideas and enhances creativity. When we grant our brains a short break, fresh concepts are more likely to emerge, allowing us to approach problems from different angles. Hence, niksen is not a futile activity; rather, it serves as a powerful method to boost our productivity and creative output.
4. Abundant Health Benefits
A demanding schedule and high stress can adversely affect one's health. Chronic stress can elevate blood pressure, contribute to cardiovascular diseases, and trigger anxiety and depression. Fortunately, this is where niksen shines.
Taking time to unwind allows both the mind and body to relax and return to their "normal functioning." According to Ekman, director of training at the Greater Good Science Centre in California, niksen can reduce anxiety, slow emotional reactions, decelerate aging, and bolster the immune system.
5. Once Misunderstood as Laziness
Niksen gained popularity in 2019 and has recently garnered more attention due to rising stress levels from hectic lifestyles, particularly during the pandemic.
High stress can lead to numerous physical and mental health issues, prompting individuals to seek relief. Through niksen, many aim to diminish stress and enhance their overall well-being.
So there you have it! Niksen has several advantages that can benefit us. However, moderation is key; indulging in niksen too frequently can lead to laziness and entrapment in one's own thoughts.
If you haven't already, it might be time to give niksen a try!
